Taylor Russell McKenzie was born on the 18th of July 1994 in Vancouver, British Columbia, and was raised in Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal. Russell was the daughter of a black man and a white mother. She grew up with her mom's family. Her skin shade made her feel different when she was a teenager. Their family was struggling with financial issues. They were always on the move and had to move 16 times in an attempt to help support their father's work. Russell shared that despite all the difficulties it was always the possibility to reinvent and make something completely new. Russell's parents had financial difficulties and she was always traveling. Russell was eighteen when she began her first acting class. She used her work savings to buy a car and would then drive to Los Angeles, to audition. As her funds ran out and she returned home, she went back to work until she was able to earn enough to audition again. This continued for four consecutive years, until she finally got her first major television role.
